WHAT IS THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM AND HOW DOES MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE WORK?

The lymphatic system is often referred to as the body's second circulatory system. It is responsible for draining fluid (lymph) from tissues and emptying it back into the bloodstream. The system manages fluid levels in your body,  removes waste products and helps fight infection. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no pumping mechanism. Instead it relies on breathing and muscular movement to assist the flow of lymph fluid. Sedentary lifestyles and diets high in fat/salt, can result in the lymphatic system becoming sluggish leading to puffiness, bloating, tiredness, low immunity and frequent infections.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a non-invasive treatment which increases the flow of lymph fluid. The practitioner uses a range of specialised and gentle techniques to move the skin, thus stimulating the lymphatic system to work harder and more effectively. It speeds up removal of excess fluid and waste products and encourages the production of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) that are important for immunity and disease prevention.

MLD was developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid in 1936 in Paris for treatment of swollen lymph nodes. There are now four main schools of MLD - VodderCasley-Smith, Földi (in partnership with Klose Training & Consulting) and LTA Fill & Flush

At Freeform Health and Fitness we are qualified in the original Dr Vodder Method. The Dr Vodder Method is an advanced technique which moves the skin over the underlying tissues using repetitive, circular and spiral shaped movements with a pressure increase, followed by a decrease in pressure leading to a pressure less phase. This change in pressure creates a pumping effect, which encourages the flow of the lymph fluid and drains excess fluid out of the connective tissue. The technique works with the skin and not on the skin. The direction of the increase of pressure and respectively the moving of the skin lies in the direction of the lymph flow. Treatment always starts with the lymph nodes and lymph vessels found at the neck and the junction of the large lymph channels found in the venous arch on both sides of the body. The strokes are performed evenly and rhythmically inducing deep relaxation.

No massage mediums (oil, cream, wax)  are used therefore it safe for those with sensitive skin.
